How to Draw a Mandala Grid in Few Simple Steps
If you’re interested in creating beautiful mandalas, it’s essential to know how to draw a mandala grid. This step-by-step tutorial will guide you on how to create a mandala grid and how to use it as the foundation for your mandala designs. With different models and video tutorials, you’ll be creating intricate and symmetrical mandalas in no time. So, let’s get started!
What is a Mandala?
A mandala is a geometric design that holds deep spiritual and symbolic meaning. While it may appear as just a beautiful pattern, it is, in fact, much more than that. Not only does it represent balance and harmony, but it also serves as a tool for meditation, relaxation, and self-discovery. Moreover, we find mandalas in various cultures, each attaching its own significance to them. For instance, in Hinduism and Buddhism, they symbolize the universe and are often used in religious rituals. Likewise, in Native American traditions, they are believed to offer protection and guidance.
Furthermore, the structure of a mandala is always circular, radiating outward from a central point. This design is not accidental; rather, it reflects the natural order of life. In addition, the process of creating or coloring a mandala can be deeply therapeutic. As a result, many people turn to mandalas as a way to calm their minds and improve their focus.
On the other hand, mandalas are not only for spiritual practices. In recent years, they have become popular in modern art and psychology. For example, Carl Jung, a renowned psychologist, introduced mandalas as a way to explore the subconscious mind. In contrast, contemporary artists use them as a form of creative expression.
All in all, mandalas are much more than intricate drawings. Because they embody harmony, spirituality, and self-reflection, they continue to captivate people across different cultures. Whether used for meditation, healing, or artistic expression, they remain a timeless symbol of balance. Therefore, next time you see a mandala, take a moment to appreciate its depth and meaning. After all, it is not just art—it is a reflection of the universe itself.
What is a Mandala grid?
A Mandala grid is the base structure that we need in a Mandala drawing to help achieve symmetry accurately.
We compose the grid by tracing many circles around the same center. Then we draw grid lines that pass through that same center. The measures of a Mandala grid are not standard and solely depend on the design you have in mind.
As a beginner, you might find it difficult to know how to choose grid measures alone. Therefore, in this blog and on my channel, I have posted many simple mandala designs. Each one has different grid measures so you could see how you can do it yourself.
Below I will share with you different Mandala grid models with a side picture of the final mandala result. I will also link each model to its video tutorial or blog article. Check the video tutorial at the bottom of this article. It shows in detail what a Mandala grid is and how it’s drawn.
How to Draw a Mandala Grid?
a- Choose your center
First step is to decide where will be the center of your mandala on the paper. In my tutorials, I tend to choose the center of the paper as a center of my mandala so I can benefit from the whole space.
b- Trace the main axes
Once you mark the center of your mandala, trace a horizontal and a vertical line, that pass through it. Exactly like in the illustration (b).
c- Draw the circles
Then, start tracing the circles by using your compass. The radii don’t have a standard size. Every mandala drawing has its own style, and, therefore, her own mandala grid measurements.
That is why, every mandala tutorial, starts with instructions on how to draw the mandala grid, and every time, I give you the proper measurements according to the mandala drawing we are creating together.
d- Mark the angles
A mandala grid is composed of circles, and gridlines that are equally separated. The distance between the lines depends on the mandala drawing you are creating. Therefore, these grid lines could be separated by 10 degrees, 15 degrees, 20 degrees, 30 degrees, or 45 degrees and more. The importance is to choose a number that could divide the 360 degrees circle into equal grid lines.
In the illustration (d) I chose to separate the lines by 15 degrees.
e- Trace the grid lines
Now trace the lines. In order to do so, join every point you marked above with the center, and trace a line that cuts the circle from side to side.
