What is a yin yang symbol?
The yin yang symbol represents the interconnection between two world ends. There is no positive without negative, there is no black without white, there is no peace without war, there is no happiness without sadness. The symbol itself with its white and black colors represents this interrelation. So let’s go ahead and start drawing our yin yang mandala.
Yin Yang Mandala Tutorial:
This is the second yin yang tutorial. In the first one, the yin yang was a mix between mandala and tangling. In this tutorial, I show you how to draw a yin yang mandala with one side in black and white and the other side in colors. In the way I see the world, black and white represent the hard moments we endure in life, and the colored side represents joy, happiness, and positivity.
- Fine black drawing pen (0.4)
- Fine point colored Stabilo (colors of your choice)
Step 1: Draw the outline of the yin yang symbol
a- Mark the center of the paper and trace a 10 cm radius circle.
b- Trace the diameter of the circle, and from the center, mark a point 5 cm away, from each side as shown in the illustration above.
c- From each of the 2 points you marked in step b, trace a 2 cm circle and a 5 cm circle. Kindly check the two illustrations above.
d- Now using the fine drawing pen, retrace the outlines of the yin yang symbol as shown above.
Step 2: Trace the mandala grid
To trace the mandala grid on one side of the yin yang symbol, and from the point shown in the illustration below draw 10 different circles. But make sure to limit the circle by the outline of the yin yang.
The circles have the following radii: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20 cm.
Step 3: Fill the yin yang mandala with patterns
a- On the first row of the yin yang mandala, draw double diagonal lines.
b- On the second row of the mandala, draw arc petals.
c- On the same row, draw inner outlines of the mandala arc petals.
d- On the third row, draw vertical double lines. Then between the double lines draw curved lines as shown in the mandala illustration above.
e- On the fourth raw of the yin yang mandala, draw double outline arc petals, exactly like those you drew on the steps b and c.
f- At the bottom of each arc petal draw two opposite swirls.
g- h- Now inside the same arc petals, draw one large teardrop starting from the intersection of the two opposite swirls. Then, draw two smaller teardrops on each side. The above mandala illustrations will help you follow the required steps. Then color the blank spaces in black.
i- In this step, start by drawing big triangles. Then inside of each triangle draw a line on the left, then a line on the right. Repeat until the whole inner space of the triangle is filled with lines.
j- Now on the outer side of the triangles, repeat the same technique of step “I” until the whole space is filled with lines.
k-l-m-n-o-p- Now in order to continue decorating the black and white side of the yin yang mandala, repeat the previous steps. Start by repeating the step” a”, then “b”, and so on until the whole side of the yin yang is filled with designs. Above you can find illustrations of all the steps so you can follow them easily to draw your mandala.
Step 4: The other side of the yin yang mandala
This Mandala side will be drawn using the colored Stabilo pens. The same steps we followed before will be repeated. First, draw circles that have the same radii as the circles traced in step 2. Then, to decorate the yin yang mandala repeat the same exact steps from “a” to “p”. Use the colors and sequence of colors of your choice.
